TPMS stands for Kia Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. It consists of four sensors – one installed in each wheel of your Kia. To prevent a potential blowout or flat tyre, they detect the vehicle’s tyre pressure and send the information to a receiver located in the vehicle. If the tyre pressure sensors detect that the pressure of one or more of your tyres has fallen below 25% of the recommended inflation level, the TPMS warning light on the instrument panel will automatically alert you.
Solid light: Low tyre pressure. Refill to the pressure recommended on the placard on the driver’s side door.
Cluster blinks for one minute at one-second intervals, then stays ON: A sensor is running out of power or is damaged. Contact your Kia partner.
Flashes at 0.5-second intervals constantly: Malfunction. Contact your Kia partner.
• According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), underinflated tyres cause 250,000 vehicle crashes each year, nearly 700 every day. Optimal tyre pressure shortens your braking distance and improves general vehicle handling.
• Maintaining proper tyre pressure extends tyre life and improves fuel economy. Thus, your electric vehicle will last longer and a regular passenger car can save up to 35 litres of gasoline each year. This translates into a reduction of your carbon emissions.
TPMS keeps you informed about your tyre pressure and enables you to effortlessly maintain all the benefits of having properly inflated tyres.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring sensors have to be replaced after 120,000 km or seven years of use, due to the limited battery life. If the TPMS light on the driver’s panel flashes for about 60 to 90 seconds before staying solid, visit your Kia partner for an inspection. If they find one of the batteries low on power, they will save you further time and aggravation by providing a new set.
Kia TPMS does not detect acute blowouts or tread separation. Since the system only works with a rotating wheel, rapid changes in tyre diameter (rotating speed) will not be detected correctly either. TPMS also does not notify the driver about tyre overinflation.
The system does not replace regular tyre maintenance, including visual inspections for damage, tyre rotation and regular checks of the tread depth.
